Numerical Modeling of Transient Flow Characteristics on the Top Surface of a Steel Slab Continuous Casting Strand Using a Large Eddy Simulation Combined with Volume of Fluid Model

In the current study, transient flow characteristics on top surface of a steel slab continuous casting strand were numerically investigated using large eddy simulation combined with volume fluid (LES + VOF) model. The validation numerical was verified via nail board measurement in industrial mold. effects speed level profile and instantaneous distribution vortex discussed. variation migrated after period time, moving from one side wide face mold to other. wave height degree standing increased an increase speed. region near SEN more likely promote formation vortices. generation became easier when vorticity peaks concentrated outer edge low-speed confluence area submerged entry nozzle. addition, effect velocity fluctuation analyzed. frequency fluctuations highest at 3~4 mm, high-frequency range 20~60 mm/s 0.9 m/min for 1500 mm × 200 caster section. linear relationship between magnitude obtained. present work aimed evaluating dynamic problem liquid powder–molten interface mold, which is helpful optimizing parameters regular practice improving quality slabs.
